Can’t tell you how long I’ve had this tie-dye denim fabric. It’s been years. I only have about 2 1/2 yds, which is not a lot work with. But I have finally figured out what to do with it. And that, my darlings, will be revealed soon.

yesterday visited my new african fabric supplier. so excited to start designing some new items. their inventory is amazing. almost had a heart attack from being so excited. and this pic only shows 1/8 of their collection. (was taking pics on the low cuz the saleswoman told me that the owner wouldn’t want me to take pics. thank god for iphones!)

can’t wait to use these fabrics to make some dope clothing!

fabrics from my small holiday collection. looks like a big ol’ mess, right? lol i promise it won’t be. will reveal the whole collection later on this week, 8 looks in total including my very first coat designs (2 coats in this collection) and working with sequins. this should be interesting…

it’s funny how a little chill in the air, along with a cloudy, rainy day, can make u happy that the fall season is on its way. yay!

and it’s funny how u can make a small change in ur appearance + people don’t know who u are. i walked into the fabric store and the employees were like, “nellie? is that u?” (yes they call me nellie.) guess i look different becuz of my hair + dark lipstick + i wasn’t wearing any glasses. ha!

wearing naKIMuli belt (worn as a head scarf), vintage jacket, wal-mart shirt, american apparel leggings, 99 cents store trouser socks, jeffrey campbell shoes, made by ag necklace, my own jewelry.

The hunter went into the bush and sat there all day waiting. All day he waited, and no animals came by. So, during careful observation and steady perseverance he began to pay attention to the elements. along came a spider. He soon became distracted and started observing a how the spider operates. How it intricately worked. Back and forth it moved in a single swift steady motion that you could barely notice, but it created a masterpiece. when the hunter returned home he began with a needle and thread patiently weaving and traping the thread until he created an intricate fabric that has evolved into the modern day kente cloth that is synonimouse with african cultures. Its the Ghanians who have made it so legendary. Along with their gold it was traded as a commodity. This story is to pay homage to the country it’s people and rich history and to salute them as the hunters who have once again crafted a failed outing into a masterpiece that has united that sepeate threads of africa into a solid cloth and a masterpiece even if its for one game

Go BLACK STARS our money is tied behind you!

so today was my 1st class in photography. it was dope. a 2hr class twice a week for 5 weeks. sounds like a lot but the time went fast today. we learned about aperature, shutter speeds, + iso. it’s kinda confusing + i was kinda feeling like, “maybe this is too much for me. what the heck did i just get myself into?”, especially when u see all these terms + numbers on paper. but when we started to take a couple of pics towards the end, i was surprised how fast i got it, especially in comparison to the other people in my class.

this is the pic i had to take in class of “the man.” lol the teacher said it was good. yay! a few people had blurry and/or overexposed/underexposed pics so i felt good that my pic came out ok. but i know i have a WHOLE bunch more to learn. we will only be shooting in black + white, which is also exciting for me. AND at the end of the session, we will have an exhibition, which is mad dope.

after class, i went + bought a whole bunch of fabric. and for the 1st time EVER, all the fabrics i wanted, i found! so now i have to get to work asap. my idea for the spring has changed significantly so me + “the team” r gonna have to bust our butts this month to crank out the samples. here is a shot of some of the fabric:

yes, using some african fabrics, some zebra print, some hologram. should be interesting…and fun. stay tuned.

bought this fabric last month. my mom hates it; she says it’s too loud. lol i have to agree with her. it is type bright. lol i didn’t really set out to buy it but the guy at the fabric store gave me a great price since it was the last piece.
gonna make a goin’ on a holiday dress with it but with a twist. hopefully i can finish it tonite so u can see it tomorrow.

saw ms lynn whitfield in one of my fav fabric stores today. i must say i was surprised:
she is maaaad short. i am around 5’1” and we were the same height!
she has gained a lot of weight, which is whatever.
she was talking on her phone VERY loudly, saying “i’m an ACTRESS, a mother, a daughter…” as if she wanted people to recognize her. (but i am pretty sure that most of the men working there do not know who she is.) at one point i actually turned around cuz i thought she was talking to me, she was THAT loud. it was just…interesting.
but i must say, her face was glowing! she has beautiful skin!

a little, little, little peeky-peek into the spring collection. i will be using sequins!
and what’s so cool about this sequins is that it is 2-toned; 1 side is 1 color, the other side another color. so when you rub on the sequin in one direction it will be another color. can’t wait to use it!

sometimes when i go to my fav fabric stores, i get swatches of fabric, for inspiration. on saturday i got these 3 swatches. i like the top fabric cuz it is kinda reminds me of african fabric even though it isn’t. the 2nd is very nyc- with its graffiti + pics of subway trains. i’ve used it in the past b4; made costumes out of it. and i just heart the lips fabric. so colorful + playful. they would make great goin’ on a holiday dresses. haven’t made up my mind on what i would like to use it for.

and i bought this vibrant floral fabric. they only had a 1yd left so i just might do a one of a kind spring/summer dress with it. not sure what style dress but it will be hot of course! lol
